WMBH.org is pleased to present WRIT's Ambassador of Goodwill Tex Meyer to Personality Profile.

This Milwaukee-born talent was a mainstay in Milwaukee radio throughout the 1960's and into the 70's. Tex moved on to other markets and positions in radio, eventually becoming Market Manager for a cluster of radio stations in Virginia, then North Carolina.

This is Tex Meyer's on-air and post on-air radio career, as told by Tex himself.

Tex started in radio in 1961 while still in high school, working weekends for two years at WTKM Hartford. His first day as a Marquette University student was also the day he landed a job at rocking WYMR Chicago. Some would consider working in Milwaukee radio a step down from Chicago. For Tex, the year of commuting and attending Marquette was wearing. H
e was happy to land a job at WRIT. He stayed there for the remainder of the 60's, moving to WOKY in the early 70's to assume a more prominent role in station management - that of Music Director. By this time a confirmed "lifer-in-radio", Tex and family moved to Chattanooga for a Program Director's job and then Cincinnati for a sales position - all the time with his eye on becoming a General Manager.

Mission Accomplished: First it was managing one station, then two, then three. Now as a Market Manager, Tex has been in charge of up to 9 radio stations at a time. He still loves radio and laughs when people ask what he used to do ... for Tex Meyer, it's always been radio.

We hope you enjoy Personality Profile with Tex Meyer.

Interview Synopsis: Born and raised in Milwaukee, as an older grade-schooler Tex' family moved to Texas. Two years later the Meyers were back in Milwaukee and Edward, the new kid at school, was re-branded as Tex when kids figured out where he had lived. Loving King Richard on WRIT, Tex knew radio was going to be his 'thing' and landed a part time job at WTKM Hartford (1961) during his last two years in high school. In 1963, the summer going into Marquette University as a Freshman, Tex peppered the new McLendon rocker in Chicago, WYNR with demos. WYNR hired Tex his fri st day of school which meant commuting between Milwaukee and Chicago. That lasted a year. WRIT hired Tex in 1964 where he stayed until the radio biz in Milwaukee began churning, due in part to powerful program director George Wilson's moving from WOKY to WRTI to WOKY. George took Tex under his wing, making him music director at WOKY. Wanting to eventually become a General Manager, Tex took Wilson's advice and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee to assume Program Director responsibilities. That station, WGOW, was owned by media magnate Ted Turner and took Tex a step closer to his goal. Although his next move - to Cincinnati and a post ion in sales pulled him off the air, Tex knew it was the path most traveled to his goal - the top management post ion in radio.

The second half of Tex's radio career - in management - has been fun. Tex likes to reminisce but truly loves what he's doing now. He's worked with hundreds of good people and was responsible for moving Michael Lee Scott, Andy Wilson (Andy Carpenter) and John David Spangler, among others, through Chattanooga. Back to the timeline ...

1976 - Tex' goal to be a GM started by selling in Cincinnati WWEZ (9 months)
1977 - WMAK Nashville - sales mgr when AM rockers were starting to slide
1978 - somewhere - GM - 5 years
1983 - Pittsburgh - GM - 14 years (B94 & WSHH)

1997 - Tampa
2003 - Roanoke/Lynchburg - 9 radio stations - staff of 70
2008 - Greensboro, NC - 5 stations - VP/GM

Other points of interest : Tex did live broadcasts from the Holiday House (owned by Volpies) and then the Play-mor. Tex celebrated his 21st birthday at Play-Mor Lounge. He was constantly out on appearances at CYO's and high schools. In those days DJ's from different stations all knew each other and respected each other. The Holiday House gig was assigned through the sales dept. Then moved to the Playmor lounge - an old movie theater. Not as classy Got into the biz because he really enjoyed people and enjoyed music. Lingo of the day used on-air - mean having fun - enjoying what they were doing. Tex cites King Richard was a great personality DJ. Johnny Holiday/Bill McCullough, Lee Rothman. (Joe) Dorsey After Dark, Geo Wilson - PD, Bernie Strachota - GM, Pat Shanahan (Rocky Fox), Robt. L. Collins. Tex drove to Chicago for the Kennedy Assignation and voiced in's/out's for McLendon's reports on WYNR. Tex went to WOKY in 69 to work with George Wilson doing music at fill-in on air and music at Bartell station KCBQ in San Diego. Tex went back to WRIT in 1970 and back to WOKY in 1971. In 1973 moved to Ted Turner's WGOW as program director (Chattanooga, Tennessee). 1977 Tex moved into sales. George Wilson was a market shaker mover. Great competition between WOKY and WRIT - Bernie Strachota and Ralph Barnes - GMs of WRIT and WOKY. Tells a great Robt. L Collins "Bernie ate Ralph" piranha story. Difference in radio today is regiment. Radio today is better, some not better in some respects, not as good in others. In the old days of Top 40 radio, DJ's picked their songs from loose 1-10/11-20 rotations. Lee Rothman got Tex into the Bar Mitzvah circuit. AM stations had bigger signals back in those days.
